108. Dexter Under Saddle

James McAuliffe

Oil, 32 x 24, c. 1872.  Robert Bonner, publisher of the New York Ledger who bought the best trotters in the world and retired them immediately from racing, sent a telegraph from Buffalo, NY, to a friend on August 14, 1867.  It read: "I saw Niagara Falls this morning for the first time, and I came down here this afternoon to see that other great wonder, Dexter, trot where he beat the world, having trotted in the unprecedented time of 2:17 1/4.  You know how I like to secure all the best things, and as I could not buy the Falls, I did the next best thing, and bought Dexter."  Bonner commissioned famed James McAuliffe to paint the horse, and presented this oil painting to his rider, John Murphy, along with a riding crop with a sterling silver band, being sold with the painting.

109. Goldsmith Maid

James McAuliffe

Oil, 15 x 11, c. 1872.  McAuliffe also painted Goldsmith Maid, the queen of all trotters in the 19th century and considered by historian John Hervey as "the most extraordinary of all trotting champions."  The celebrated "Maid," wild and unbroken until she was eight, won 95 of 119 races and finished second 16 times.  She raced from coast to coast, ending her storied career at the age of 20, having raced 50 tracks in 48 different towns and cities.  She won $364,200, more money than any thoroughbred or harness horse until the runner Sun Beau caught up with her earnings in 1931.  She lowered the world trotting record for a mile seven times between 1871 and 1874, the last time when she was 17.

110. Man O'War

George Ford Morris

Charcoal, 22.5 x 17.5.  George Ford Morris did this charcoal in Paris, probably in 1924 or 1925, on handmade paper.  It was one of many studies he did of the great Man O'War, perhaps his favorite horse of all time.  He wrote, "I have never grown tired of endeavoring to depict the dignity, grace and power that were characteristic of his every pose and movement."  This charcoal hung in the Kentucky Horse Park Museum's exhibition of Man O'War and Secretariat.  It was #59 in the inventory of Morris's home, Fordacres in New Jersey, became the property of his daughter Patricia Morris Davis on his death in 1960, and passed to her son Nick Davis after her death.
