For 60 years, from the 1840s to early 1900s, the lithography firm
started by Nathaiel Currier and subsequently famous as Currier & Ives
captured the beauty and history of the American trotting horse, and
American history in general. Their stone lithographs have become
art treasures. The HTA Scholarship Fund, in recent years, has
become the largest auction market in America for Currier & Ives horse
racing prints. Here is our 2008 collection of great original
Currier & Ives stone lithographs, a rare opportunity to start or augment
a personal collection.

55. American Winter Scene Currier & Ives
Large folio stone lithograph, 29 x 22. Very rare
and in good condition. Color excellent, few old repairs from
margin into print upper left, small stain in sky above roof. A
true rarity evident by the fact print is not contained in either
Conningham or Cohenour reference works on Currier & Ives. George
Cohenour, who wrote the 2001 book on Currier & Ives lithographs, says
this print is without a doubt a lithograph and hand painted, with all
Currier's information normally found on his large folio prints.
The paper is from the mid-1860s and the print does not appear to have
been altered in any way. The exact same print was made by Joseph
Hoover of Philadelphia in 1867, and Cohenour says it was common practice
for lithographers of the period to copy from each other (see Going
to the Trot and Coming from the Trot, one set by
Currier & Ives and one by Haskell & Allen, in this collection).
Who copied from whom on American Winter Scene is not
critical: the superb print speaks for itself, and almost certainly is
the Currier & Ives version.
