SLEIGHING ON BROADWAY
Thomas
Benecke
Chromolithograph, c. 1870
An amazing print, Thomas
Beneke drew it in 1855, depicting the famed, lively Broadway of that
day in front of P. T. Barnum’s museum. It originally was published
as a hand-colored lithograph, with the artist’s name, title, date
and publisher in the bottom margin. This version, printed around
1870 after the introduction of chromolithography, has vivid color,
with the margins trimmed to remove the previous publication
information.
