29. HOME TO THANKSGIVING

Artist Unknown - After G.H. Durrie & Currier & Ives

Oil on Canvas in original ornate period frame, 20 x 29

SOLD - $6500

(The oil painting, c 1900-1910.) In 1867, Currier & Ives published their famed lithograph Home to Thanksgiving, from the 1857 painting by G. H. Durrie. It proved an instant success, one of their most popular prints ever, and it was named Number 4 on the Original Best 50 of Currier & Ives’ more than 7,000 prints. It was Number 27 on the New Best 50. The lithograph is extremely rare, one currently offered on the New York market for $27,500. This is not the original Durrie painting, but sometime around 1900 to 1910, perhaps slightly earlier judging from the 1893 metal clamps on the ornate original period frame, an unknown artist painted this remarkably faithful oil on canvas copy of Durrie’s earlier work. It is one of the most fascinating works of art that HTA has offered for sale in the 30 years of its College Scholarship equine art auction. The painting has been cleaned and a small tear in the sky expertly repaired by an outstanding restorer. It is an exceptional and intriguing work of art.
