256. ASCOT. THE GOLD CUP

Alfred Egerton Cooper

(British, 1883-1974)

Oil on canvas, 24 x 36, signed.

SOLD - $4700

Cooper the celebrated English portrait painter, was selected by the fames John Singer Sargent as an assistant after graduating from the Royal College of Art, and he worked for Sargent at the painter’s famed London studio at 31 Tite Street in Chelsea, which had belonged to James McNeil Whistler. Cooper’s portraits of Winston Churchill are renowned, and he also was commissioned to paint King George VI. He painted racing at Ascot and Epsom, and this large and beautiful oil, done after World War II, typifies his best racing efforts. Two of his racing scenes, from the Marshall B. Coyne collection, sold at auction in New York for $19,150. Cooper died in 1974 at 90, and his son Peter became director of the Grosse Pointe Art Gallery in Michigan.
